EQUINE INSURANCE
Julie M. Lucas DVM, DACVS
Southwest Equine Medical and Surgical Center

Types:

Mortality - the insurance company pays you the insured value in the event the horse dies (accidents, injuries, illness, humane destruction, theft, etc.) Sometimes includes emergency surgery costs.

Major Medical - Covers veterinary bills up to set limits (ie. $5,000.00 per claim, per year). Does not cover routine care (vaccinations etc.). Usually a $250 or $500 deductible. Examples: Lacerations, respiratory infections, lameness work-ups, non-emergency and emergency surgery, shockwave therapy etc.

Surgical - covers emergency surgery only.

Loss of Use - company pays you the insured value if the horse can no longer perform as you had intended (ie. Dressage). May give you 80% of the horse's value and let you keep the horse, or the company may take the horse. Relatively difficult to obtain (many x-rays, must be very sound) and expensive. Claims are relatively difficult to prove

Downside of Horse Insurance:

Once a problem is identified (ie. Colic, right forelimb lameness) you can expect it to be excluded from coverage upon renewal the next year. May be reversible, may be for the life of the horse. Does not guarantee that you will not have vet bills.

Not all coverages are available to all breeds / uses.

Many companies do not not insure race horses, foals until they are six months of age, or horses that have been "nerved".

Joint injections, Adequan, and Legend are not covered, and often neither are dental surgery, OCD surgery, and neurectomy surgery.

Costs:

Depends on value of horse and coverage chosen. Example: $10,000.00 horse with Mortality and Major Medical (from 5000-10000 of coverage) approximately $600-700 per year. $2,000.00 horse around $350.00 per year.

May need to have a veterinary exam.

Will need to be able to prove value of your horse (bill of sale, appraisals by professionals etc.)
